April 2014, the start of a new financial year and one of impending growth for Derek Lewis. Enter Louise Morton; newly-appointed Management Accountant, and the person charged with the task of restructuring the department to help the company facilitate its expansion. Today, we ask Louise for her views on how things have progressed since that time:
‘Staff numbers have grown significantly, including the recruitment of key position holders within the company. From a financial standpoint, the annual turnover has seen growth year on year, this resulting in meeting thresholds for statutory audit last year.’
With company growth, of course, should also come personal growth for its employees. We asked Louise what she has gained from her time at the company so far:
‘Derek Lewis has been my first move into an industry role, having come from a practice background. The move was a decision based on my circumstances at the time, having become a first-time mum and requiring a role that would still challenge me, whilst allowing me time at home. I feel Derek Lewis has given me that opportunity, and the responsibility of a key position that supports my continuing professional development. It has also given me a wide range of experience in all aspects of the business that extends beyond just my job role. This has served to expand my knowledge, enhance my team management skills, and provide insight into commercial future decisions made by senior management.’
As she continues to reap the benefits of her position and her own hard work, what does Louise enjoy personally about working for Derek Lewis?
‘The culture of Derek Lewis has always been that of a relaxed, yet focused working environment. I feel that the management style of the Directors works well and brings out the best in people whilst giving ownership to each member of staff. Ideas and suggestions are always gladly received and there is never a dull moment in the office meaning I can embrace the variety of challenges from one day to the next.’
Given her involvement in the ongoing development of the company, we were keen to round off by asking Louise how she sees its future unfolding:
‘With key members of staff now on board and a new business development team in place it gives me great confidence that we can stay at the top of our game. We definitely possess both the knowledge and experience to succeed in going forward. I’d like to see myself at Derek Lewis for a very long time and progress and grow personally, alongside the company.’
